Pathways to Independence: An overview
by Lorrie Heffernan, Coordinator of Day & Vocational Services, Pathways To Independence
Pathways To Independence is a not for profit organization that supports people who face challenges in everyday life. Individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, or acquired brain injuries are supported through a variety of residential, recreational or vocational lifestyle options.

Pathways were created in 1990 to provide support for the transition of nearly 100 people from long-term institutional life to community living. Pathways met the challenge of developing a community based living model for each individual, focusing on increased independence and personal decision making. Critical to the success of this model was the recruitment of staff with the necessary expertise and experience to provide support and care and the adoption of person centred approach to planning. The mandate of Pathways was subsequently expanded to include support to individuals with acquired brain injuries. In 1991, as part of the government initiative to close some nursing homes, Pathways established its' first supported home for survivors of traumatic brain injuries. In 1997, Pathways was one of the first social service organizations in Canada to be accredited by the Canadian Council on Health Service Accreditation.

Pathways To Independence has three other subsidiary incorporations:
· Pathways Foundations is a registered public foundation, which is the fundraising arm for the organization.
· Pathways Ventures is a business trust of Pathways To Independence and all income producing activities are carried out under this corporation: and
· Pathways Non- Profit Housing is financially responsible for the properties and upkeep on the properties owned by Pathways.

Pathways Vision
That all people enjoy a quality of life as an accepted member of their chosen community.

Pathways Mission
We facilitate a way of life that enables individuals with challenges to realize their potential and achieve self-empowerment.

Pathways Supports and Services
Pathways To Independence provides a variety of residential, vocational and leisure options. Individuals who need these supports and services can choose those that meet their needs and future directions. We assist people to live the lifestyle they choose with dignity, respect and self-empowerment.

Supported Homes
Homes in urban or rural settings with 24-hour staff assistance are an option available to people requiring more involvement. These Supported Homes are a blend of new and tastefully renovated period homes including specifically designed barrier free living environments for those who face mobility challenges.

Family Homes
For those who want to be part of a family, Pathways has developed another option. The Family Home Support Program offers individuals the opportunity to live with host families who include them in their daily lives.

Supported Independent Living
Not everyone needs help everyday or with all things in their lives. Pathways Independent Living Support allows people to live on their own with only the assistance they need. For some, meal planning and preparation is difficult, while others may only need help with their banking. Our professional staff provide counselling and encouragement with whatever the need.

Day & Vocational Services
At the Pathways Employment & Training Centre, we offer work activities in a variety of small businesses. Production work is offered through the woodworking and sewing department. A bakery and laundry offer services to the local community and retail experience is gained through the onsite outlet store. Work is complimented with educational and leisure activities such as computer aided learning and opportunities for games, crafts and social events. An independent car wash is available to community customers and provides work experience in a community setting. Individualized employment facilitation is provided for those seeking community-based employment and for youth leaving school and entering the adult world of work.

For folks who are country at heart, we offer a Hobby Farm setting that includes activities such as raising small livestock as well as vegetables and herb gardens. Social leisure opportunities are available through our two day programs "Community Connections" and "P.A.L.'S West". Both programs offer a variety of onsite options such as crafts, games, music, drama, and social events as well community based options such as swimming, bowling, bowling, library activities and a variety of timely special community happenings.

Volunteers
An integral part of the fabric that weaves all of Pathway's supports together are the volunteers. Volunteers bring with them a wealth of experiences, interests and skills needed to enhance our programs, assist with special projects or develop meaningful relationships with people.
