Ottawa Transportation Company Provides New Opportunities for People on ODSP
On March 1, 2006, the Ottawa based bus company, OC Transpo, began a one year pilot project that introduced the OC Transpo Community Pass to Ottawa residents who receive benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).

This Community Pass looks the same as a regular OC Transpo Express bus pass, but will cost only $28.25 a month. It is hoped that this reduced rate will allow more people on ODSP to purchase a pass. That in return should enable them to have greater freedom and access to more community activities without the high cost of a normal bus pass or regular bus tickets. The response thus far from people with disabilities has been extremely positive. For those who were purchasing a bus pass in the past at the regular rate, they now appreciate the extra money they have available each month. It is amazing how an extra $50 a month can have an large impact on people’s quality of life. For many individuals who were unable to afford a bus pass in the past, they now can afford this Community Pass. Many have commented how with a bus pass, they are able to get out and go places they were unable to go to before.

It is hoped that the idea of a Community Pass will not only become a permanent reality in the Ottawa area, but that the idea will expand throughout Ontario.
