2005 ORWC Annual Member’s Day
This year’s annual ORWC’s Member’s Day was held at the Whitby Mental Health Centre on Wednesday April 13th. This year featured three separate presentations. The morning was kicked off with Rory Sheehan of Positive Strategies speaking about Marketing People with Barriers. Rory’s session was energetic as well as informative, bringing to light many of the myths associated with having a disability and how to work with our community to address these barriers effectively.

The 70 attendees of this busy day were treated to a fabulous lunch where you could build your own sandwich catered by County Towne Catering, a business run by Durham Community Mental Health Association.

The afternoon was split into two sessions. Grace Parker led her staff team from Mental Health Penetanguishene in a session outlining their unique vocational programs. This session included a survivor’s testimonial from Dianne Stringer that left many of us reminded of why we find our jobs so rewarding. Please see Dianne’s survivor’s story in this newsletter.

Also in the afternoon was the ever popular and energetic Ian Armitage leading a packed room of participants in a session on Creative Thinking. Ian had them rolling on the floor with a juggling lesson; a great start to get those creative juices flowing and have staff thinking outside the box.

Many thanks to those of you who helped with running Member’s Day including Jim Paul and my co-worker Lisa Pennock, and to those people who attended the day. We could not have done it without you! Several managers commented on the increased energy their staff had upon returning to work. I think we achieved our goal.
